Holiday and craft bazaars: Five churches will hold their annual holiday and craft bazaars Nov. 4-6 at various locations in Newton. All of the churches also offer food for purchase, and admission is free. First Christian Church, 102 E. First St., will hold its event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 5. Three other churches will also host sales on Nov. 5. Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, 1200 Boyd, will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Salem United Methodist Church, 115 Old Main St., will hold its annual craft show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. First United Methodist Church, 801 N. Main St., will host its sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Nov. 6, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 101 E. Ninth St., will offer its annual festival sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gym.

Taste of Christmas: This holiday open house is sponsored by the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce. Pick up a puzzle board at the participating businesses. Complete the puzzle and return the board to be entered in a prize drawing. Businesses are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 10, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 12. Santa and free carriage rides will also be featured from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 10 at 500 N. Main St. Click here for a list of participating businesses.

29th Annual Holiday Bazaar: This annual holiday market features beautiful handmade items from regional craft vendors. The market is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newton Activity Center, 415 N. Poplar St. Admission is free. Drawings for door prizes donated by craft vendors will be held throughout the day. Food by Mi Mamma will be served beginning at 10:30 until it sells out.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner: The Newton Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, at Trinity Heights Methodist Church, 1200 Boyd Ave. All are welcome and the meal is open to everyone. For transportation to the meal or to have a meal delivered call 283-6410 after 10 a.m. on the 24th. The meal is free and any donations will go to Harvest of Love. Volunteers are welcome, just show up Thanksgiving morning any time between 10:30 and 1:30 for your assignment.

Ten Thousand Villages Sale: The Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale will feature fair-trade international items for sale on Fridays and Saturdays only at Kidron Bethel, 2517 N. Main St., North Newton. The sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 25-26, Dec. 2-3 and Dec. 9-10.

Parade of Lights: The Newton Lions Club sponsors the annual Parade of Lights. All of the participating floats in this classic Christmas parade are illuminated. Newton visitors and residents are invited to watch the parade, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. The route follows Main Street in the historic downtown business district. Admission is free. The public is also invited to the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce at Fifth and Main streets from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 for a free community open house. Following the parade, spectators can shop many downtown stores that will stay open late.

Five Places of Christmas: Visit Newton's top attractions for free and enjoy holiday displays and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participating locations are Carriage Factory Art Gallery, Warkentin House, Kauffman Museum, Harvey County Historical Society and Bethel College.
Christmas Gift Market: The Kidron Bethel Village Christmas Gift Market will feature handcrafted art items by residents and staff artisans, peppernuts, zwieback, gift mixes, quilting, woodcrafts, paintings, photography, tea towels, wood toys, home and holiday decor. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the Menno Hall Chapel at the village in North Newton.
Hesston Bethel Performing Arts Series: Cantus will perform a Christmas program at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Hesston Mennonite Church, 309 Main St., Hesston. Vespers Service: The Newton Treble Clef Club will host its 48th annual vespers service at 3 p.m. Dec. 4 at Faith Mennonite Church, 2100 N. Anderson, Newton. The performance is free and will feature the Treble Clef Chorus, Hearts 4 Him and the Newton High School Jazz ensemble.
Breakfast with Santa: Enjoy breakfast with Santa from 8-11 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Hunter's Landing building, 200 W. 11th, Newton. Tickets are $5 and include a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. Tickets are available at the Newton Performing Arts studio in the Chisholm Trail Shopping Center.
Holiday family celebration and "Elf the Movie": First Church of God will host a free family holiday celebration from 6-8:45 p.m. Dec. 10. Activities include pictures with Santa from 6-6:45 p.m. Cookies, a story and hot cocoa will follow from 6:45-7:15 p.m. Children will also have the opportunity to write a letter to Santa, with a response mailed directly to their homes. "Elf the Movie" will be shown from 7:15-8:45, with special Christmas popcorn and other treats. Admission is free for the evening. For more information, call the church at 316-641-5946.
Holiday Harmony Home Tour: The annual Harmony in Holiday Home Tour will be held on Dec. 11 to benefit the Charles Olson Memorial Scholarship. Participants can pick from one of two times, either 2-4 p.m. or 7-9 p.m. The tour of a local home will feature performances by guitars, the Bethel Brass Quintet, flute, vocalists flutes and piano. Reservations can be made at Prairie Harvest, 601 N. Main St. The asking donation is $12.50. The scholarship benefits Newton High School music students.
Handel's Messiah: A performance of Handel's "Messiah" will begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at First Mennonite Church, 429 E. First St., Newton. Admission is free.
